#63 Too Loud or Too Old?

Is life too loud or are we just too old? It seems that everything is louder than it used to be and Mike is happy to talk about it. Our first official 5K is behind us and we also have a book, music and listener comments. Enjoy!

Hi Mike and Chris. This is Ellen, the blind college student from NY state. I have a few comments for the show today.

1. Another running podcast for you to check out is
especially if you're training for a marathon. I listened to your shows 61-63 today and remembered this show and went and downloaded a lot of episodes,
since i stopped listening to it about a year ago.
2. First of two comments about “the volume of life”—I have to admit, I like that phrase. I remember one time when I was a kid, maybe around Sam’s age, and my folks and I went to the toy store. The music in there was very loud, and we left after maybe 5 minutes in the store.
3. Other comment, re Mike’s desire not to be the old person that everyone is yelling at: A year and a few days ago, my grandfather died unexpectedly, because of what we believe was his deafness in at least one ear. He unknowingly left the car running in his garage, and, well, the expected happened. As his granddaughter, I’m in agreement with and in full support of what you guys have said.

Keep up the great show.

If you guys are in the Portland OR area and are thinking about running a marathon, have I got a program for you. www.pdxfit.com. Portland Fit took me from just running 5K in March 01, to running the Portland Marathon in Sept.01. The new season starts this weekend. Anyone can go from non-runner to marathon finisher in 6months, using that program. Check it out. Love the podcast, as a working mom to a 1 year old and 4 year old, it really resonates.

Yes! We're not too old and it's way too loud!!! Totally agree with you. For years I've felt this is the case, and I'm not old. We don't go to the movies anymore because we hate the way too loud volume (Maybe it's up to compensate for all the people who talk and discuss the movie loudly without regard to others?)

I've actually asked a waitress to turn down the music in a restaurant before...couple of times because someone went and turned it back up.

It's an epidemic and I'm glad to hear others feel the same. One of my biggest buggaboos: leaf-blowers!!! Those things do terrible damage to your hearing and I just don't get them. (Blow the leaves a few feet so the wind can blow them back again? Huh?)

So Mike - think of me cheering you on next time you have to stand up for your hearing rights! You're not alone-everyone else is just stone deaf.
