#64 It Wasn't Me...

Have you ever been accused/punished for something you didn't do? Mike and Chris both have and they share their story and how it has shaped the kind of parents the are today. It has also had an impact on how Chris communicates with her class. We also have a book, music and listener feedback. Enjoy!

I loved your show as usual. I do have a story about getting in trouble too! Maybe that's what messed me up - (not really, but it's good to have an excuse!)

Some kid on the bus threw something at the driver. She insisted that the guilty person identify themselves - which was just not going to happen. So she drove us all back to the school and we had to put our names on a list for the vice principal to review. Instead of calling my parents to come pick me up, I stubbornly walked home thinking my lateness would incense my parents and they would do something to let them know how wrong the driver was to accuse the whole bus load of kids!

But they acted like it was no big deal and I never heard a thing from the vice principal either.

So I guess I'm all worked up to this day about nothing!!

I didn't remember this till now. One day some friends and I were playing in the front yard. I must have been around 5-6. A car was driving by and one of the other kids threw a rock at the car. As the car screeched to a halt, the other two boys ran off. I stood there dumbfounded as the driver stepped out of the car and proceeded to give me an earful. As ridiculous as this may sound, I remember telling the guy, "it's all right, don't worry." (In other words trying to comfort him since was obviously so upset.) I guess I just didn't think to run since I did nothing wrong.

Hi Chris & Mike:
I live in Caracas, Venezuela, and I've been listening to your show since February. The first episode I listened to was the Mystery Reader one, and I think it was great. But this is the first time I'm commenting on something, and I wanted to tell you both that episode 64 was also great and very helpful. I have a son about Sam’s age, and he has been through several situations in school where the entire class gets punished because of something that only one or some did, and that have been really frustrating for most of the kids –including my son- that find the situations really “unfair”. I’ve been working on this with him, and told him that he has to tell his teacher how that makes him fill; he understands, but he doesn’t want to talk to her. So, last week we were on a trip out of town and I was prepared to share your story with my family. My husband, my son and I listened to the episode, we discussed it , and then we related it to his own situation. The conversation was great. I still don’t know if it’s going to change his behavior; will have to see when we have a new case. But we all enjoyed listening to your message, and for him, it was an opinion that not only my mom has; but others too. Thanks.
